- WoW disconnects
- Lagaran
- Freeze frame boss fights
Sound familiar?
- Uninstall Lagonite!
- Ignore Lagonite users!
Only a few days ago I was musing that WoW disconnects had gotten smarter. There is no real evidence of this, but a couple of things that the comments highlighted were:
- Since 3.2.2 disconnects have become more frequent, and
- Thanks to Lethal’s link there are many ways to improve your play experience, including shafting mods with large messaging requirements.
Driving solution to disconnects
My disconnecting stopped once I did a manual update of my net and video drivers (via windows update and vendor website), so that’s a great 1st place to start.
My lag and frame rates got marginally better, but not enough, so I also followed one of the recommendations on the linked forum and installed Fubar_AddonSpamFu, just because I am curious by nature.
Carbonite, GTFO of my Dalaran, Boss fight, Battleground and Server!
Sure enough, one of the 1st offending message spammers I noticed was GearScore. You can shove that in your recycle bin too you elitist emblem lovers!
But the out-and-out “I will adversely effect your game play experience” mod was Carbonite.
Don’t get me wrong, I have used, promoted and even loved Carbonite in the past. Until they went premium, until now…
I’m sure the creators of Carbonite are good folks and they have developed an otherwise excellent mod that I would continue to recommend, under other circumstances, but something has to change.
To think I originally changed to Carbonite because it had a lower footprint than the mod I was using at the time. Our own TreeHuggerDave was pimping it’s gatherer abilities to me only the other day.
I’m using (why does my iPhone spell checker want to correct “using” with Jong?) Quest Helper these days, which you can see is a bit spammy, but only a fraction of Carbonite.
Healbot is also a bit spammy, but I dare say you would prefer my heals to my Carbonite messages, especially mid boss fight. (yes I realize I have 2 versions of LibHeal installed, I didn’t, but I do now. That Guild positions mod is going too!).
Rise up and strike down your spammy foes!
- You like Gold selling Spam?
- You like “Join our Guild, we haz tabard” spam?
- You like anal [pyroblast] spam?
No?
Then why would you put up with Dalaran crippling, Boss fight wiping addon spam?
You wouldn’t?
Good, here’s what to do…
- Install Fubar_AddonSpamFu and identify the enemies of your play experience.
- Disable your own Carbonite (if you have it)
- Post a link to this post in your guild forum (here’s a short one: http://tinyurl.com/yhdcja8 )
- Whisper your best mates, your guild leader, perfect strangers (just not the Horde) and tell them that you are putting them on /ignore until they too uninstall Carbonite (and GearScore and any other “relatively worthless” addon).
- Tell Carbonite (and the other spammy mod) creators to reduce the spam, especially if you are paying for a reduced game experience.
I thought mods weren’t allowed to adversely effect our in-game experience.
Blizzard told us they wouldn’t let this happen, I thought they meant in the sense of game play experience, not only we will prevent mod makers from making money.
Blizzard, install Fubar_SpamFu, you can get it here… and strike these addons down with your [Mighty Man Hammer of Anal Jong].
But I can’t live without Carbonite/GearScore/[insert mod of annoyance here]!
If you MUST use addons (hey, I must, so I’m OK with you needing to), then pick some better ones.
Need to /flex your epeen and exclude appropriately geared players from starting content because the aren’t Triumph Emblem equipped?
Use PugChecker!
Need an arrow to tell you where the 10 Tauren tails are for that quest, use QuestHelper, TomTom (it’s already in Cartographer) etc, or god forbid, look it up on WoWhead
Need a map full of Gatherer nodes (TreeHuggerDave tells me Carbonite Routes now takes the gathering out of gathering… but), use, I don’t know, maybe use Gatherer?
Yes I know Gatherer gets a mention in the forum’s post, but you need to realize I was running Gatherer in those screenshots and it doesn’t even make the Spam-o-meter scoreboard).
Carbonite, GTFO of my Dalaran, Boss fight, Battleground and Server!
A little bit of /silly
Ok, on a majorly lighter note, I need to finish this with a laugh.
Syrana hightlighted a WoW oriented video that she saw (and I missed on WoW.com) the other day. Just on the off chance you aren’t a Lock loving Syrana follower, here it is.

So Carbonite’s the one that’s been insta-lagging me out of Dalaran. interesting…thanks for the heads-up!
Not necessarily *the one*, but I was amazed at how much it was throwing around on a Thursday night when there was a low population in my guild etc.
I suggest you check out the fubar addon and see what it is that is sending you/sending out lots of data
Woot, mentioned!
I am happy to report also, that after many raids I have not disconnected once, and overall DCs have been down majorly.
So much, that we downed Anub’arak 25 man 🙂

WoW grats… awesome news… and of course you got a mention… you could really say it’s a post in your honor!
I don’t use carbonite but I have been having problems with disconnects from the game recently, most noticeably since I started going into battlegrounds. Thanks for the links, I shall be having a firtle through my addons at the weekend 🙂
As I mentioned to Kriz.. it Carbonite may not be your (only) problem… and it doesn’t matter whether you have carbonite installed… I don’t either, haven’t in months.
I’m guessing it was talking to my quest helper or gatherer…
So it’s isn’t only what you are doing, but also those around you.
Recount would be another good example… It sounds like rather than everyone in a 25 man raid having it, you just want it on a few key positions.. or have it, but turn off the syncing
Hate to tell you this but QuestHelper will hurt you more than Carbonite. QuestHelper has a ridiculously massive memory footprint. It’s 5 times the memory footprint that Auctioneer has, for Hodir’s sake. It may not knock you offline, but it will drop your fps to 1. Which is effectively the same thing.
I’m guessing the network issues are primarily affecting people from Australia? Cause I’ve never had a problem with network latency due to addons. Just network latency due to Comcast.
@Flaime: Actually, I just realized I got my Quest* confused… I was running QuestHelper way back… TreeHuggerDave put me onto Carbonite, but I switched to QuestGuru…
So I really should go back and edit that… maybe I will when I am not about to do a boss fight.
Latency has always been and issue, but this is something different… this is snap shot screens (fps) it’s just insane.
Apologies for confusion…
Hell there was a time if you had Questhelper, it wouldn’t even let you load in Dalaran, I had to log in Stormwind.
Damn it though I need my Questhelper for my Alts…I’m way to lazy.
Quest Guru, Lightheaded & TomTom will take all your cares away…
I tried Carbonite and despised it. I also get very annoyed with people whose Carbonite tells me every time they pick up a quest item. I don’t #$%@#$ care how many hellboar-buzzard-eyeball-head-feet you have! I do care about important things in my chat window being forced out by hellboar-related junk.
Oh yeah.. a long hated “feature”.
Why not just tell people when you are done…
Some people install and never open the options of course…
Crap… I just recommended it for n00bs. 😦
Seriously though, if you DON’T have someone around to give you tips on where to quest, WAY TOO MANY of the old world quests are long trudges with littl/no clue as to how to complete them.
What WOULD you suggest?
Call me a gimp, but if it weren’t for Carby, I’d be lost on a number of my qyests…
It’s probably fine at a low level, if you don’t get so attached to it that you can’t do without it later.
It’s really only when you start getting into mega populated cities that it’s gonna cause you problems. So… Just Dalaran, or maybe SW and Org during a holiday. Or if you’re running wow on a struggling machine. Otherwise Carbonite should be just fine until you switch your hearth to Dal.
But I beg you please, recommend they turn off the annoying chat announcement feature… for the sanity of their guildies and partymates! 😛
It’s funny… I had been running Carbonite and running around Dal for a few days. I had not had a singlThen I read Gnome’s post. I have DCed 3x in Dal now. Needless to say I shut it down before I go to Dal.
So, Gnomageddon; I’d like to blame you for causing Dal to hiccup on me now 😉
Seriously though, I’m glad I read this BEFORE I started having problems. If I had started seeing all the disconnects, I may have quit in frustration.
Oh, and the Leatrix addon? It dropped my “usual” latency of 260-300ms down to 120-130ms. NICE!!!!
I’ve become rather dependant on Carbonite. Without the “go here” question marks and little X-es on my map (and without those nicer maps) I am just about lost. (I don’t have quest helper either)
As I mentioned above, try Quest Guru, Lightheaded & TomTom same difference, less spam.
Yeah and speaking of spam, encourage people to turn off their “I just picked up another worthless Tauren’s tail” spam
I’ve been running that addon for a few days and a huge amount of traffic is generated by Carbonite…and I don’t even run it! I will be having words with my guildies and trying to persuade them to do without it I think.
Give them some options (as mentioned above) otherwise you may just get stonewalled…
