Don’t tell Zupa, but I think fishing sucks.
It sucks in real life!
It sucks in WoW!
It probably doesn’t help that I a neither a good fisherman in real life or WoW.
Likewise, I tend to run about like, well like a little hyperactive Gnome, in real life and WoW.
The one fish I remember catching in Real Life was from the once majestic (before white settlement) Murray River.. it was a carp.
I was so excited… my Dad and Uncles laughed while they killed it and threw the vermin back into the river to feed the native species.
Gone Fishing!
I had a little WoW time on Wednesday night, so I thought that I would try out the fishing dailies everyone is talking about (while I waited for something, anything, better to happen). Turns out any Gnome and their dog can do them, so why not.
I wasn’t put off that I had to go to Winter Grasp to fish.
I even quite proudly told the whispering Mage that yes you could catch things in Winter Grasp, after all, that’s what the daily asked for.
And catch I did…
Driftwood… I am sure I can make something out of that… an ashtray perhaps?
Piece of glass…. Not quite the epic gem I was hoping for, that my friend had hauled in 30 minutes earlier. (Which I jokingly said Marcia stole from me the night before when she got me rolling drunk…)
Tangled Fishing Line… most likely mine in the 1st place…
Sure wish I could smoke them to make the cancerous fishing pain go away…
Mmmm maybe if I collect enough of these, I can stitch them back together and make a couple of hankies… maybe even a flying carpet?
Painful childhood memories of that carp come flooding back…
Still I did manage to catch the required fish, I even managed to get a couple of fishing skill points.
No, it didn’t take me 500 fish to complete the quest (but ohhh did it feel like it!)… but just shows you what an avid FisherGnome I am, doesn’t it…
So what uber reward did I get for my fishing exploits…
Can anyone spot the irony in that?
I didn’t really feel any smaller… I didn’t look any smaller either, well not to me.
I sort of consider it a bad joke… where’s the steriods?
Epic in it’s simplicity
Remember that sword I told you about the other day?
I finally got around to equipping it… just for laughs.
I think is is absolutely beautiful in it’s simplicity… look back at those other weapons I have been picking up.. Scary sure, but beautiful?
This one even has a glow all it’s own!
Patchwork Quilt (aka the Gnome got a rug)
Pet?
Funny looking pet… I like to call it a MOUNT!
Actually, you can call it mount number 10… yes, yes, I know, nothing to write home about.
Anyway, from now you can refer to me as Gnomeaggedon, Stable Sweeper of Gnomeregan
What’s that, it’s stable keeper?
Pfft… like I ever ride any of the other mounts…
I am pretty excited about this.. I remember the day fondly when WoWinsider WoW.com announced the coming of the flying carpet and how excited I was when Spooner shared some discovered screenshots of the flying carpet. I’m sure I had a post about video of the flying carpet… but I just can’t find it.
Anyway, to leave you today, I give you:
Gnomeaggedon, Stable Sweeper of Gnomeregan and his Magnificent Flying Carpet!
Yes it sucks that I only play at night… so all my pictures are dark…

I wouldn’t mind fishing (or the dailies) so much if the bobber splash were more obvious.
That, and if Marcia Chase would GIVE ME MY FREAKING FISHING POLE ALREADY
>:|
and I dare say, considering the Mage Flamestrike comments on this post… if Engineering explosives could be used for a bit of AoE fishing?
don’t remind me about fishing – i’m going to have to take it up at some point, if only for a little while, to get my chef’s title achievement. i dread it because everyone says how boring it is.
congratulations on your carpet – i’m DREAMING of the day i can make mine. 35 more points or so to go for me!
urrrgh… if I was just doing it for the sake of cooking, then I would be fishing the AH…
If I couldn’t find my requirements there… I would through a few coppers at Mr. Tree!
For some reason he likes fishing…
Thanks for the grats on the carpet… I have macroed it.. otherwise I wouldn’t use it…
The main thing I like about it is “banking”/turning when in the air… it’s so wide it really gives you a great feeling of turning.
(And thanks to Mr. Tree for providing the additional mats for that too!)
well, the thing is, there’s a recipe drop that ONLY comes from the fishing dailies (captain rumsey’s lager), and it’s BoP. and you need it to get the title of “chef”. so, i HAVE to take up fishing to get my title!
had to revisit this topic after reading THIS in the latest patch notes:
“The recipe for Captain Rumsey’s Lager can now be randomly found in the quest reward crate, barrel, or spice bag from the cooking dailies.”
WOOT – no fishing for me, haha! looks like i’ll just keep doing dalaran cooking dailies, simultaneously working my way towards the Chef’s hat (which will also make me cook faster after the patch) and the Chef’s title achievement in one easy daily!
😀
Rhii’s a hideously bad fisher-goat too. I don’t think I fished with her between Auberdine (wanted Gubber Blump’s fishing pole) and Shattrath (wanted that other fishing pole… um, Seth’s?)… only to find out I can’t even equip Seth’s fishing pole because my fishing skill isn’t high enough.
/facepalm/facepalm/facepalm
I have to get back to it soon though, because like Prelimar said, it’s stalled my cooking not to have fish.
Ick.
Every now and then I have a moment of insanity… I grab my pole, start fishing, then as my mind starts to cloud over, i remember why I don’t do it.
I usually only get one or two skill ups per session… I just can’t fish for that long
The only reason I fish IRL is as an excuse to drink beer by a river. I find the best way is to tie a rock to the line about 4 feet below the bobber. Then people will leave you alone because fishing is a quiet “sport”, and the fish won’t interupt the beer drinking. I call it a win-win.
Gratz on the carpet. I got the regular “pet” a while ago, still working on the magnificent pet. Are you expected to feed your pet rug? What does a rug munch on?
Ahhh the drinking masked as fishing trick… I used to do that in pubs listening to bands.. always the free bands, because that was 3 more beers…
pet.. funny isn’t it…
Not sure.. but I fear at some point it is going to fold around me like a venus fly trap and consume me… never trust magic… says the mage…
Does anyone else want to sing that song from Aladdin when they see someone on their carpet?
I read the title and was all “what is this gnome-thing talking about ‘fishing sucks’?” It does not. Granted in WoW it’s far less entertaining than the real thing, but there are still good things to be found from fishing. Just selling Northrend fish (even uncooked) can net mucho cash.
Now I’m an avid fisherman in RL as well, so maybe that’s why I tend to be more tolerant of it in WoW? The funny thing about hearing about other people fishing is that it’s always the same story: My uncle/brother/dad took me fishing when I was 6, we caught one tiny fish, I hate it. My guess is that your uncle/brother/dad didn’t know how to fish either and of course didn’t teach you anything about it either. It’s amazing how many more fish you can catch by just learning the basics. Last years fishing trip with friends we managed close to 700 fish in a week. That’s 100 fish per day and we had between 3 and 5 people there. So that’s anywhere from 20 to 30 fish per person, per day–if we fished the whole time, which we didn’t. If people caught more during their fishing experiences, I’m sure they’d like it more. Also, carp are gross.
Actually my whole family (males at least) are avid fishermen, hunters, trappers etc…
I was brought up in the days when you could still trap rabbits out in the back paddock etc…
Fishing… any fishing… river fishing, trawling (big or small boat), rock fishing, surf fishing, flood fishing, spear fishing… you name it, we did it… but for some reason I only ever caught weeds and handed over bait to the fish…
Ohhh and 70% of my time seemed to be spent untangling fishing line…
As I am time limited, I tend to feel like fishing time is wasted time… I should be grinding mats, or buff foods or running instances or something, anything, rather than fishing.
I plan on fishing while watching the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs tonite, just like I did a few days ago. I actually don’t mind fishing in WoW. I’ll pass for irl, but it’s something kinda mindless to do when you’re multitasking. ^_^
Also, I’m one copper coin, two silver and four gold away from the fishing cheesements. Because waiting for groups to gather in Dalaran gets boring sometimes. ^_^
I have thrown my line in the fountain once too… I will do it again, if only to work out the right range.
Fishing in WoW…pfft I’m a mage. I blow stuff up!! Let me Arcane Blast a pool of fish, now we talking.
yeah… and Pyroblast is for deep sea fishing!
hey, theerivs is right! why can’t i flamestrike a spot and not only kill a bunch of fish all at one time, but also make a tasty fish soup at the same time??
Ahhh combo points…
Fishing increases by 1 point
Cooking increases by 15 points…
nice
I totally third theerivs’ idea of fishing. Sprink approved. ^_^
Gnome approved as well!
theerivs is totally right, we mages should have, like, free fishing skill points from aoe. That would be rather awesome.
and cooking points as well!
Next time attach a lure, and you won’t catch any of that grey crap (assuming you have more than 300 fishing skill; if you don’t, then don’t expect to catch stuff of any worth).
Yes, there is plenty of junk in the reward bag, but there are also Epic gems, and vendor items worth over a hundred gold, so don’t give up on your fishing daily.
Worst part is… that was with a lure… fishing is currently at 320, so I would have been at ~420 with the lure.
Still, I got myself some free gold from vendoring it, with no damage incurred… can’t complain about that
@Prelimar: Ohhh does it…. is that where I got it from…
Good news is I got it from the Outland fishing dailies then…
I read on WoWhead where someone picked it up at quite a low fishing level < 150… so you wont (may not) have to struggle too much
yes, i read that it’s not too hard to get anymore, which makes me breathe a little easier…
I have just been running through lists of achievements… looks like the cooking ones will be easy with a bit of hunting and gathering at the AH… Whats a few hundred gold for a few worthless achievements?
@Prelimar: Ah ha!
See there is a reason not to be bleeding edge in this game…!
